Set in an established Mount Eliza neighbourhood on a site sloping west to east with all-day northern sun, the house was designed to be shielded from the street around a private landscaped north courtyard. The horseshoe plan reveals the courtyard only once you pass through the front door, and it is visible from the living, dining, kitchen and main bedroom.
Concrete floors, walls and roof create a quiet, grounded interior, softened by timber cladding and flooring. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and projecting roof and floor planes blur inside and out; projecting concrete eaves control sunlight through the day, and the reverse-insulated roof keeps the exposed concrete ceiling thermally efficient, with the thermal mass stabilising indoor temperatures.
